Solid or engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is more traditional. With solid hardwood, planks are made from a single, solid piece of real wood. It tends to be thicker at ¾-inch with an added wear layer that allows it to be refinished multiple times.

Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, is made of thin slices of hardwood that are layered atop some type of high-quality wood composite, such as plywood. Engineered hardwood is more budget-friendly and can be installed in basements while solid hardwood should only be used above grade. It is also usually around ½-inch thick and can only be refinished once, meaning the entire floor will need to be replaced if it becomes too worn or damaged.
